We caught up with TAC Vanes and Swhacker Field Staffer Matt McLeod to talk about how his journey in archery started, how it’s evolved, and what’s helped him sharpen his skills over the years. His story is a great example of how passion, patience, and precision all come together in the world of archery.
Q: How did you first get into archery?
I first got started in archery around five or six years old. I’d go out in the yard with my dad, learning everything I could so I could be as good as he was.
Q: How did your practice change as you got older?
When I was younger, I would always shoot from 20-25 yards, maybe 30 at times. As I grew older and wanted to try longer distances (50-60-70 yards), I noticed I became a better archer at those 20-30-40 yard shots. And when a deer or animal came into those distances, I felt more comfortable and confident.
Q: What got you into working on your own gear?
COVID started it all and I wanted to learn more about the equipment I was shooting and how to do things myself. I reached out to a friend of mine who’s a bow genius and just generally a really helpful guy., At his recommendation, I bought a bow press plus a few other things for my own use and, even now, rely on YouTube for help.
Q: Anyone in the archery world you look up to or follow?
I follow Levi Morgan mainly. a world champion archer and really knows his stuff when it comes to archery and setting up a bow to perfection. So, he’s a great one to follow if you’re looking to learn more about archery.
Q: Let's talk about arrow building. Why do you do it yourself?
I think building your own arrows is important if you want to become a better, more confident archer. One tip I’d share: I cut my arrows and make sure both ends of the arrow are square. Coloring with a silver Sharpie on the end will show any high or low edges after spinning the arrow on a squaring tool. When all silver is gone, you know your end is square.
Q: What gear do you trust when it counts?
Using TAC Vanes and Swhacker Broadheads on each end of my arrow has me covered. Knowing I have brands that are tested and proven to be some of the best is important.
